How To Become An Organ Donor In Ohio

Organ donation is gifting life to someone in need when you pass away, an honorable act advocated by the Department of Motor Vehicles. On any given day, over 100,000 people are waiting for an organ while 20 people die just from waiting and lack of availability. By becoming an organ donor, you reduce this harsh reality.

While almost half of the Ohio drivers are organ donors, many do not realize that you can become an organ donor at any time. All drivers are asked at the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles if they would like to be an organ donor every time you apply for or renew your driver’s license or ID card.

There are other methods though, however. You can register as an organ donor in person, by mail, or online. If you are below 18 years old in the United States, you must have a legal parent or guardian give consent but can still be registered through typical methods as listed.

When registering to be an organ donor in person, it is a quick “YES” given to a DMV employee member who is creating or updating your driver’s license or ID card. According to the DMV, “When you say ‘YES’ to organ donation on your license application, you officially consent to give the gift of your organs, tissues, or eyes upon your death for any purpose within the law.”

It is important to note that consenting at the DMV does not include donation of bone marrow, blood, or your complete body for research. This indication and consent must be disclosed via mail or online methods.
