FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Dedication Ceremony on Monday, November 19th for School-Based Health Center Opening in Middletown

Middletown City School District has partnered with Primary Health Solutions for a School Based Program with Fully Integrated Care

Middletown, OH - Primary Health Solutions, a Butler County based organization that operates Federally Qualified Health Centers, has partnered with the Middletown City School District and several donor organizations to establish a school based health center for the district. The 3,600 square ft. center is located on the back side of the property at the High School and the new Middle School location - 601 N. Briel Blvd., Suite B.

Comprehensive health services will be provided at the center, including primary care medical, dental, vision and behavioral health services to students, their family members, school district staff, and the community at large.

The need for school based health services in the area is significant. Of the 6,300 students in the Middletown City School District, 97% are eligible for free and reduced lunch. This metric is often used to justify services for low income families. Planning for this center began in 2016. The center will improve access to care for all children within the district, regardless of their insurance carrier or lack of insurance. Center staff will be available to assist families with insurance enrollment, if uninsured. Services will not be provided without parental consent.

"Our partner organizations have made it possible for us to offer excellent integrated health services at this site." said Marc Bellisario, President & Chief Executive Officer of Primary Health Solutions. " The project began with a $25,000 planning grant from Interact for Health, and since that time, Interact for Health has committed an additional $500,000 for staffing and dental equipment."

School-based healthcare can serve students differently, based on need. Statistics show that teens are the least likely to get the recommended health services. Medical services include immunizations, sports/work/annual physicals, asthma or other chronic disease management and acute care for sick or injured students. Mental Health services will be based on unique client need. Vision services will include comprehensive eye examinations and the prescribing and dispensing of glasses if necessary. Dental services will include preventative exams, cleanings, x-rays and corrective treatment as needed.

The purpose of the center is to keep students in school and ready to learn. Students will receive care during the school day, without requiring the parents to leave work and lose wages. The center will be open year-round and provide services to the community - not just the students from Middletown City Schools.

"Health and education go hand in hand. If children are bothered by tooth decay, poor vision or untreated asthma, they won't be able to reach their full potential in the classroom." said Dr. O'dell M. Owens, President and CEO of Interact for Health. "Interact for Health is proud to support this School-Based Health Center, and efforts to improve the health for students, families and community members in Middletown."

Other partner organizations include Deaconess Associations Foundation who gave funds to establish a Deaconess HealthCheck primary care center, Kettering Health Network who gave to support medical provider staff salaries and OneSight, (a global vision care nonprofit),who donated vision equipment for the center.

“We know that vision goes hand in hand with learning, yet there are still one in four students in the U.S. with an undiagnosed vision correction problem,” said Janet Duke, Program Manager at OneSight. “That is exactly why OneSight is focused on providing vision care solutions to students across the U.S. and we are thrilled to be opening the first school-based vision center in Middletown in partnership with Primary Health Solutions.”

Center leadership, State and local officials, partner organization representatives, and community leaders will gather to celebrate the launch of the operational phase. The center will begin seeing patients on December 1st.

To see the center, and celebrate the grand opening, please make plans to attend the event on Monday, November 19th beginning with a ceremony at 4:30, followed by an open house that concludes at 7 p.m.
